Watch the video and read below for a look into how smart lighting transforms spaces into sleek, adaptable, and intelligent environments.

At this year’s LightX, hosted by Bell & McCoy and FRM, Al Uszynski of Inside Lighting sat down with Shakil Ahmad of Scout Lighting and Timothy Miscovich of wtec for an open discussion on smart lighting and the many benefits it can bring to a project.
A New Era of Office Space
The return to office movement is influencing design decisions today, creating a demand to make spaces more adaptable, innovative, welcoming, and comfortable. Spaces are now being built to prioritize comfort, sustainability, and smart features from day one instead of an afterthought.
Tech That Shapes Design
Shakil Ahmad noted that lighting controls are the new heart of design, not a last-minute addition. Intelligent controls are shaping how people feel and work in a space. With smartengine, lighting seamlessly adapts to occupancy and mood while also monitoring the indoor air quality.
“Controls have allowed us to do all three things: smart, sustainable, and atmospheric.”
– Shakil Ahmad, Scout Lighting
Why Low Voltage?
wtec's smartengine is a low voltage lighting and sensor technology that transmits power, data, and control all over a streamlined infrastructure. This approach simplifies installation, cuts down on energy usage with up to 75% savings from lighting and enables real-time data to be captured and used across a building’s systems.
“Data is the new gold. And without it, you can’t really do anything smart or sustainable.”
– Timothy Miscovich, wtec
Smarter Data = Better Buildings
With smartengine, facility managers and building owners can get immediate insight into:
- Energy consumption (helps local laws like NYC’s Local Law 97)
- Occupancy and space usage
- Indoor air quality and climate control for healthier environments
- Lighting energy savings & automation
- Integration with building management systems (BMS)
Collaboration is Key
We are thankful to work with our partners like Scout Lighting and look forward to bringing future projects to life that are not only inviting, but also sustainable and adaptable.
